DIY or BUY BROKEN BONE BALM REMEDY
The Magical Herb | Comfrey |Broken Bone Remedy
My Mum was a nurse, not just any old nurse…one of the best! Most of her working life was set in Private Nursing Homes in Perth Western Australia. I remember as a teenager Mum hobbling in from the car after work.
The combination of Diabetes and long long days on her feet were unkind. I would grab the peppermint foot cream from the Body Shop, the strange pink one that smelt like toothpaste and I would rub her feet at the end of our “beddie” It was an old day bed that we had set up in our family room, whilst we watched A Country Practice religiously. Her ankles would feel hot, to the touch. As a child I didn’t think much of it but later Mum was diagnosed with Charkots Foot Disease.
Charcot foot is a condition causing weakening of the bones in the foot that can occur in people who have significant nerve damage (neuropathy). The bones are weakened enough to fracture, and with continued walking, the foot eventually changes shape.
The xrays did not bring good news. There were various bones broken and she was in so much pain it was inevitable she would have to retire. I found a book at the library about natural health and remedies for broken bones and this is where I first learned of Comfrey. I went to the local chemist and found a jar of Comfrey Ointment. I applied it to the sore ankle every day twice a day for a month. When Mum attended her next x-ray the Dr wanted to know what she had been doing. The bones that were essentially turning to chalk were reassembling and increasing in density. Nothing short of Magic really! Ive always revered Comfrey since as a magical herb!
Recently my friend Penny over at Primal Creationz tripped over and broke a bone in her foot. At first we didn’t think it was too bad but she is now in a boot and it is taking too long to heal. Feeling silly about forgetting the comfrey ointment I got busy!
Having been travellers for the past few years I am now loving having the opportunity of growing my own garden. It is filled with magical herbs and vegetables. I collected all the comfrey leaves I could find. Knowing that I dont have weeks to wait for it to dry I put the leaves in a warm oven (70c) with the door propped open. The trick is to not let it get too hot or the good stuff will evaporate or burn.
Once dry I wizzed it through my coffee grinder. I then filled an empty teabag and stapled it and dropped the bag into about 50 ml of Organic Coconut Oil in a small Slow Cooker on low with the lid off.
Now…ideally…I would normally hang my comfrey till bone dry for a week or two. Then sit them in carrier oil in the sun and turn regularly for a few weeks to infuse. But Pennys foot cant wait for that!
In the morning I removed the bag, and poured the amazing rich green oil into a bowl and heated my beeswax and cocoa butter. I let it melt and once it was warm and not piping hot I added the comfrey oil.
Together with the Comfrey I added some extra essential oil healing power!
Helichrysum or Everlasting Oil: <—- Click here to purchase from $55.00
is hands down the best essential oil for healing broken bones. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and works wonders on the bruising and pain.
Wild Sage :<—–Click here to purchase for $20.00
One of the most crucial oils in bone healing. It is a strong anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic. This helps to bring down any swelling and localised pain. Its also high in Monoterpenes which in studies has prevented the loss of calcium in the bones.
Rosemary CT2 Organic: <—– Click here to purchase from $17.00
Mainly made up of Monoterpenes, I added rosemary for the same reasons as the Wild Sage. It will prevent calcium loss in the bone and ensures the bones set back properly during the healing process. It is also antifungal and antimicrobial so there is less chance of any infections.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Please be aware that this is a herbal remedy and should not be used if you are pregnant , lactating or suffer from kidney or liver disease. Please consult your Health Practitioner if not sure if this remedy will suit you.
